AT THE HEIGHT of the dog days of summer, I ventured to Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz to take a peek at the possibilities. Alas, dreams of an autumnal swell bubbling somewhere in the deep trenches of the Pacific was nothing more than a figment of my well-oiled imagination. The ocean was as flat as a varnished table top and as inky black as a wet harbor seal. We have about a month more of the Pacific lulls that lead even the most patient surfer to suffer anxiety breakdowns. Thankfully the towering redwoods that stand sentinel above the coastline beckon, providing relief from the maddening boredom with hundreds of miles of beautiful hiking trails.
